Meta Disabled Our 81,000-Follower Instagram Account Overnight. Here’s What Happened (And What We’ve Learned)

If you’re here because you used to follow @TheFUNemployedFamily, first of all—thank you.

If you’re here because Meta disabled your Instagram account and you’re frantically searching the internet for answers, I’m sorry. I know exactly how you’re feeling.

On July 17, 2026, our family’s Instagram account—built over nearly eight years and followed by more than 81,000 people—was suddenly disabled.

No warning.

No explanation we could understand.

Just…gone.

What followed has been one of the most frustrating experiences we’ve ever had as online business owners.

What happened?

Our family runs a travel and worldschooling business online. Instagram wasn’t just where we shared photos—it was where we connected with our community, worked with brands, answered travel questions, and earned a significant portion of our income.

On July 17, everything changed.

A private Instagram account we’d created years ago for our daughter was flagged by Meta. Based on the messages we received, it appears Meta believed the account belonged to someone under the minimum age requirement.

We’re still not entirely sure if this was the event that triggered everything else, but shortly afterward:

  • Ben’s Facebook account was suspended.

  • Our Instagram business account, @TheFUNemployedFamily, was disabled.

  • Other connected accounts were affected as well.

Because these accounts were linked through Meta’s Accounts Center, we believe the enforcement may have spread across multiple accounts, although Meta has never confirmed this.

To this day, we still haven’t been told exactly what Community Standard our business account supposedly violated.

We requested manual reviews—again and again.

Since the suspension, we’ve opened multiple support cases through Meta Verified.

We’ve requested manual reviews.

We’ve spoken with several support representatives.

We’ve had friends submit internal referrals.

We’ve waited.

And waited.

As of writing this article, we’ve now requested a manual review four separate times.

Most recently, we were told that the account is considered closed and there is nothing further customer support can do.

The Meta Verified surprise

One of the most frustrating parts of this experience is that we were paying for Meta Verified.

One of the biggest reasons we subscribed was access to premium customer support if something ever went wrong.

Ironically, when our business account was disabled, we lost access to the very support benefit we were paying for.

Thankfully, I was able to purchase Meta Verified on my personal account and use that to contact support, but even then the process has been slow, repetitive, and ultimately unresolved.

The hardest part

Honestly?

It’s not losing followers.

Followers can come back.

It’s losing years of work.

Travel guides.

Conversations.

Comments from people whose vacations we helped plan.

Messages from families we’ve inspired.

Brand relationships.

A digital scrapbook of our children’s childhood.

Whether the account is eventually restored or not, those memories are irreplaceable.

What we’ve learned

This experience has completely changed how we think about building an online business.

If your business depends on a single platform, you’re more vulnerable than you probably realize.

We’re now focusing on:

  • rebuilding on Instagram

  • growing YouTube

  • strengthening our website

  • growing our email list

  • making sure our business can survive regardless of what any one platform decides

It’s a lesson we wish we hadn’t learned this way.

Can disabled Instagram accounts be restored?

We’ve spent countless hours researching this question.

The answer seems to be…

Sometimes.

Some creators recover their accounts within days.

Others wait months.

Some never get them back.

We’re still hoping ours will be restored, but we’ve decided not to pause our lives while we wait.

We’re starting over

If you found this article because you used to follow @TheFUNemployedFamily, we’d love to reconnect.

We’ve started a new Instagram account:

@FunemployedFamily

If the original account comes back, wonderful.

If it doesn’t, this is where our adventures will continue.

I’ve shared the complete timeline—including screenshots, what happened, everything we’ve tried, and where things stand now—in this Instagram Reel.

And if you’ve experienced something similar, I’d genuinely love to hear your story in the comments.

Maybe together we can figure out what Meta won’t explain.
