How To Paddle Board with Kids!

September 20, 2019 by Ben Lutz in Collaboration, Blog, Travel Tips, Kids, USA, Michigan, Traverse City, Family Travel Tips, Activities

How did you spend your summer? Were you lazing by a pool, soaking up rays? Were you out in nature getting in great hikes and burning some serious calories? We spent our days hitting the lakes as often as possible with our inflatable SUP.  It was so much fun that even Liesel joined in!

We loved the “portable adventure” aspect of our BlueFin SUP. It was small and easily fit in to the back of our car. Once we got to the beach, it was so easy to inflate and get out on the water quickly! Liesel even helped us unpack and pump it up!

Are your curious about how we got the littlest member of our travel tribe "on board" (hehe, see what I did there?) with our favorite warm weather activity? Read below for our favorite tips on paddle boarding with kids!

Make it fun

I think we all know that kids mimic our emotions. If we're stressed, they're stressed. But if we're excited, they often get excited too! Make sure you let your excitement shine through. Don't hold it back!

Get them involved

Let them help unzip the bag, help pump up the board! Liesel even got to paddle on her own! We gave her the smallest part of the paddle and let her get to work!

Encourage them!

Believe it or not, our little world traveler can be pretty timid and scared to try new things. So we always make sure to encourage her and praise her for being so brave! Nothing melts our hearts more than seeing her proud smile because she did something that scared her a little!

Don’t underestimate the power of snacks

A snack on the beach is fun, but sharing an orange on a paddle board with Mom or Doodah? Out of this world! Plus, all that exercise can really work up a kid's appetite!

Don't force it

Some days, Liesel was just not feeling the SUP. And that's ok. Sometimes we're not feeling it either. The important thing is that we didn't force it on her and eventually, when she saw how much fun we were having, she wanted to join in anyway!
